However, later, the British followed the modern education system in India. They replaced the age-old systems of education in the country with English methods. Nevertheless, the education system in India needs a lot of reforms. Here we have expressed the Indian education system in a very lucid and systematic way.

The history of the Indian education system days back to the time of Ramayana and Mahabharata. Historical Indian education system is also called the Gurukul system. That time there were gurus who are now known as teachers and disciples who are now called students. In the Gurukul, the Guru and the disciple lived together under the same roof till the completion of their education.

The disciples were expected to help the guru with all daily tasks as part of their learning. The gurus used to teach all subjects from Sanskrit to sacred scriptures and from mathematics to metaphysics to the children from the upper strata of society. The Gurukulas of that time focused on the practical aspects of life. The students were taught in an open classroom in the vicinity of nature. This early system of education in India continued for many years until the advent of the modern education system in the nineteenth century.

In the early 19th century, during the British period, the modern education system was brought to our country by Lord Thomas Babington Macaulay. Rooted in the ancient teachings of the Vedas and Puranas; the Indian education system has come a long way from old school gurukulas to new age educational institutions. The core strength of this modern education system was examinations and a well-defined curriculum, which gave importance to subjects like science and mathematics and subjects like philosophy, metaphysics were given a back seat.

Open classes in Gurukuls were replaced by brick and stone classes.  The essence of Guru Shishya Bandhan was taken over by the more formal relationship between teacher and student.  Examinations were conducted from time to time to understand the progress of any student. The focus of the education system shifted from learning to memorizing concepts to get good marks in examinations.

Problem with Indian Education System

The Indian education system is one of the oldest, most diverse educational systems in the world. Our Indian education system faces a lot of problems. It does not allow it to prosper and help other children to be successful in life. The biggest problem that one has to face is the poor grading system. It judges the a student’s intelligence on the basis of academics, which is in the form of exam papers.  It is very unfair to students who are good in their overall performance but not as good in specific subjects.

Moreover, they only try to get good marks; and do not focus on understanding what is taught.  In other words, it encourages scoring good marks through copying and not really understanding the concept efficiently. Furthermore, we see how the Indian education system focuses more on theory.  Only a small percentage is given for practical purposes. It makes them run after bookish knowledge and not really apply it in the real world. This practice leaves them confused when they go out into the real world due to lack of practical knowledge.

Most importantly, the Indian education system does not give enough emphasis on the importance of sports and arts.  Students are always asked to study all the time . They do not get time for other activities like sports and arts. However, Education is given utmost importance in India with schemes. Like free and compulsory education for 6 to 14 year olds, Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Abhiyan and mid-day meals in government schools to encourage students to attend school.

How can we improve the Indian education system?

Since the Indian education system is facing a lot of problems. In conclusion, We need to come up with effective solutions so that it improves and creates a brighter future for the students.  We can start by focusing on the skill development of the students.  Schools and colleges should focus not only on ranks and grades but also on the analytical and creative skills of children.

Moreover, the subjects should be taught practically, not just theoretically. This will help them in better understanding of the subject without complicating the whole thing due to lack of practical knowledge.  Also, the syllabus should be updated with the changing times and should not follow the old age pattern.

In addition, government and private colleges will now have to increase the payroll of teachers. To save money, schools hire teachers who are not qualified enough. Consequently, This creates a very poor classroom environment and learning. They should be hired if they are fit for the job and not because they are working for a low salary.
